Notarizing in Hospitals: A Peek Behind the Curtain

Kendra Marroquin

Working as a notary in healthcare facilities like hospitals, nursing homes, and hospices isn’t your average appointment—it’s a whole different ball game. Patients are often at their most vulnerable, and navigating these settings takes extra time, compassion, and preparation.

I’ve encountered signers who are lying in hospital beds with IV poles nearby, wearing medical gowns, or connected to machines that beep and buzz.

Some are ill, heavily medicated, or even unable to fully sign their name. It’s my job to ensure they’re alert, aware, and able to proceed before I notarize important documents like Powers of Attorney.

Here are a few challenges that often come up:

ID Issues: Many patients don’t have their ID on hand, but options like credible witnesses or alternative documents can save the day.

Facility Rules: Each facility has unique policies, and understanding them is key to ensuring the documents will be valid.

Time Management: Interruptions from medical staff, family, and the environment mean these appointments take longer than usual.

Here’s What You Can Do:

If you or a loved one needs a notarization in a medical facility, try to have a current ID or know someone who can act as a credible witness. Reach out ahead of time to discuss your unique situation so everything goes smoothly.

While these appointments can be complex, they’re also some of the most meaningful. It’s a privilege to help people finalize important decisions when they need it most.

Let’s chat and make sure your documents are done right—no matter the setting.
